<p>The World Outrigger Canoe Sprint events has a history spanning 30 years. The sprints are held and organised by the International Va&#8217;a Federation (IVF) every 2 years. There are now 25 member countries which includes all continents.</p>
<p>To be able to compete in this event there was a qualifying event which was held at the Australian National Sprint Titles in February 2012. The Mooloolaba OCC Senior Master Women qualified to represent Australia. Some members of the crew have competed in prior World Sprint events in various parts of the world with some very impressive podium results. One of our crew has also represented Australia in the Dragon Boat World Championships winning 2 gold medals, the first of any Australian crew. Another member of the crew competed in the Olympics with the K4&#8242;s. Our results at regattas reflect our committed hard work on and off the water. To be competitive at this international level, the crew is committed not only to the regular club training regime, there are additional sessions on the Lake Kawana sprint course and an intensive land based program.</p>
<p>Mooloolaba OCC is one of approximately 17 clubs in the South East region (zone) of Qld. The club has been running for nearly 21 years with many achievements nationally and internationally since its inception. For many years Mooloolaba OCC have been the champion club for National events (sprint and marathon). In achieving these goals, the club has managed to find a happy medium between helping people realise the greater Australian pastime of enjoying the water safely and fostering the spirit of competition and camaraderie that goes with outrigger canoe paddling and incorporating the significant cultural history of the outrigger canoe. Our enjoyment fuels our success.</p>
<p>Attending this highly competitive event will be crews from Canada, USA, European, South American, Australian and Pacific/Polynesian countries.</p>

The event was held to teach kids about safety on the water, being sun smart, to promote the sport of sustainable fishing and generally have a good time. The Mooloolaba Game Fishing Club boasts the reputation of the &#8220;Friendliest Club in Qld&#8221; and normally its members spend time wide of Mooloolaba to tag and release Black Marlin, Blue Marlin and Sailfish on gamefishing vessels. However this event was about giving back to the juniors.</p>
<p>25 Juniors, 20 under 10 and 5 aged between 10 and 16, fished on 12 boats. All teams caught fish and 95% were released back into the river. Flathead, Whiting, Bream, Moses Perch, Trevally, Estuary Cod and Morwong were the most prolific catches. Numerous juniors caught their first ever fish and the smiles on all the faces told the story for the day.</p>
<p>The event started at a 8:00am, with a shotgun start from The Yacht Club with a BBQ and presentation at Midday. Along with &#8220;Reelax&#8221; the parents of the juniors and the Mooloolaba Game Fishing club members dug deep to provide prizes and awards.</p>
<p>All kids walked away with a new fishing rod, trophy, DVD&#8217;s, electronic games, scooters, movie passes, boating safety kits and much more.</p>
<p>The Mooloolaba Game Fishing Club will be holding another day soon with twice as many entrants already booked in.</p>

<p>In a historic event, twenty-nine yachts enjoyed a wonderful day of sailing out of Mooloolaba Marina.  On Sunday 19th February the large fleet of local and visiting yachts took advantage of the superb sailing weather to celebrate the Mooloolaba Marina as a sailing venue.  The REUNION FUN SAIL was organised in an informal way by several local yachties to bring together many sailors who have enjoyed sailing from this venue over the decades.  It gave the chance to meet friends and acquaintances, celebrate sailing on the Sunshine Coast, and celebrate the success of the social venue The Yacht Club at Mooloolaba Marina.  The Sunshine Coast Yacht Club (SCYC) supported the event by conducting the start/finish of the fun sail in conjunction with the 4 races of Heat 3 of the SCYC All terrain Hobie Cat Series.  The SCYC Race Committee liaised with the organisers of the Queensland State Laser Titles regatta to ensure there was no clash between the courses set.</p>
<p>After the briefing at The Yacht Club, everyone was eager and excited to get out on the water and fun sail just like the good old days.  There was an air of friendly rivalry with challenges and other words exchanged across the water.  As it was a pursuit course, the early starters had to hurry out of the river to reach the start line.</p>
<p>The SCYC start boat was on station all day to record all start and finish times.  The combined fleets made a magnificent site off the coast from Mooloolaba to Marcoola.</p>
<p>After a most enjoyable sail the crews met at the bar of The Yacht Club to discuss the days sailing and to reminisce over pleasant memories of sailing and socialising at this great venue. The Yacht Club, as event sponsor, provided prizes for placegetters in both Cruising Division and Division 1.  Matt Dillon, General Manager of The Yacht Club, welcomed the sailors to the venue and made the presentations to the winners:</p>
<p>Division 1:     1st Big Wave Rider, 2nd Big Galah, 3rd Inisheer</p>
<p>Cruising:        1st Freestyle, 2nd Cristela, 3rd Cavalcade</p>
<p>The event organisers have asked the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club to arrange a follow-up event.  This is planned for Saturday 24 March.  Feedback from Feb 19th&#8217;s participating boats in regard to courses, start/finish line and handicaps will be taken into account.  The Yacht Club has again agreed to sponsor this event.</p>
