A courtesy bus is now available for Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm til late! It will leave on the hour and will travel to Quad Park on Nicklin Way, to the bridge on Bradman Avenue, and to Sippy Downs and Buderim. It is a 12 seater bus. If bookings are made for 12 people we will definitely consider going further than the designated areas!

The World Outrigger Canoe Sprint events has a history spanning 30 years. The sprints are held and organised by the International Va’a Federation (IVF) every 2 years. There are now 25 member countries which includes all continents.

To be able to compete in this event there was a qualifying event which was held at the Australian National Sprint Titles in February 2012. The Mooloolaba OCC Senior Master Women qualified to represent Australia. Some members of the crew have competed in prior World Sprint events in various parts of the world with some very impressive podium results. One of our crew has also represented Australia in the Dragon Boat World Championships winning 2 gold medals, the first of any Australian crew. Another member of the crew competed in the Olympics with the K4′s. Our results at regattas reflect our committed hard work on and off the water. To be competitive at this international level, the crew is committed not only to the regular club training regime, there are additional sessions on the Lake Kawana sprint course and an intensive land based program.

Mooloolaba OCC is one of approximately 17 clubs in the South East region (zone) of Qld. The club has been running for nearly 21 years with many achievements nationally and internationally since its inception. For many years Mooloolaba OCC have been the champion club for National events (sprint and marathon). In achieving these goals, the club has managed to find a happy medium between helping people realise the greater Australian pastime of enjoying the water safely and fostering the spirit of competition and camaraderie that goes with outrigger canoe paddling and incorporating the significant cultural history of the outrigger canoe. Our enjoyment fuels our success.

Attending this highly competitive event will be crews from Canada, USA, European, South American, Australian and Pacific/Polynesian countries.

Congratulations to the winner of Sunshine Coast Yacht Club’s (SCYC) Mega-Esky Raffle!

The prize of a mega-esky full of beer (value $500) was donated by The Yacht Club. It was drawn at The Yacht Club on Friday 6th January 2012.

The winner was Julie Harvison of Twin Waters.

The next major raffle (Mega-esky) will be in the week up to Australia Day – to be drawn on Australia Day (evening). The Esky will be displayed in the foyer and tickets will be available from SCYC or The Yacht Club reception.

The new volunteer initiative, “Friends of The Yacht Club and Marina” organised and participated in their first working bee on site on Saturday January 14th 2012.

A huge amount was accomplished, including;

* removal of rubbish

* weeding and planting of gardens at entrance to The Yacht Club

* removal of excess earth and rock from outside A finger amenities

A huge effort and many many thanks to those that attended including a number of visitors to our marina.

A BIG thank-you !!!

The morning was concluded with a BBQ and friendly chat under the palms on the grass at the marina.

The next “Working Bee” is on Saturday 18th February 2012.
